SYDNEY’S Story
My name is Sydney Helmers, and I currently play volleyball at the University of Texas. I fell in love with the sport at around nine years old. Growing up in a competitive family meant I was always surrounded by sports, especially volleyball. My uncle, who was a referee at the Rio Olympics, inspires me to keep playing. Although he sadly passed away in 2016, he remains a constant reminder of the lifelong friendships and support that the volleyball community offers, which I truly cherish.
Before going to the University of Texas I was a three-year starter at Assumption High School in Louisville, Kentucky. I was named Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) First Team All-State in 2019, 2020, and 2021, First Team Academic All-State in 2021, named the 2021 Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Region 7 player of the Year, and named to the KHSAA Region 7 All-Tournament Team in 2020 and 2021. I was also named to the JVA All-National Team class of 2023, AVCA Phenom List in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and was a member of the 2019 AAU All-American Team.
I chose the University of Texas because the coaching staff’s constant support and the team’s culture made it feel like home. Being 16 hours away from my family was a concern, but I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to help me feel at home while pursuing my passion for volleyball. My freshman year was filled with ups and downs, from shoulder surgery to winning a National Championship. Through tough times like not being able to play put into perspective the love I have for the game and being able to win a National Championship last year proves that hard work, dedication, and just having fun with your sport can lead to amazing accomplishments.
